Classroom Party in a Box
I volunteered to be in charge of the Feb. 14 Valentine’s Day party at my son’s school for him and his classmates plus three other classrooms of second graders. Our school has each grade level’s parties be all the same. For example, all the second graders will have the same type of party, food, games and activities.
My idea of a party in a box will debut this afternoon for a fun, carefree, streamlined celebration that should cut down on chaos and waiting, while about 80 children are partying it up and opening their love notes from each other.
Here are the top ten reasons why kids will absolutely L-O-V-E this year’s classroom Valentine’s Day party, I’m hoping.
10. Shiny pink foil cupcake liners — who doesn’t love that? Also, no cupcake pan is even needed for baking.
These were lined with standard brown paper cupcake liners, filled with one large scoop of red velvet cake mix then baked at 350° F for 18-19 minutes.
9. White frosting, tinted with pastel colors, piped into individual, disposable plastic cups to decorate the cupcakes.
8. Handy, disposable birchwood spoons to scoop and smear.
7. All the sprinkles under the kitchen sink.
To contain them, tiny, zippered plastic storage bags do the trick.
6. Cheetos Paws to balance out the sugar rush.
Cut the zippered tops off of Walmart’s Great Value potion control snack bags, then fold it over and adhere with tape.
5. Chilled miniature cans of Sprite, A & W Root Beer and Fanta Orange Soda.
Served with colorfully cute French Bull “Foli” patterned, paper flexi straws.
4. Conversation hearts Valentine’s paper napkins to wipe off sticky fingers.
3. Paper lace, white placemats at each desk instead of odd-sized, staticky, plastic tablecloths.
2. The iridescent, craft paper, mooncake treasure boxes with a translucent lid (that slides on and off) feels like a you’re opening present.
1 And the number one reason the students are going to love this Valentine’s party is because they’re kids and relatively easy to please AND it’s a FOUR DAY weekend!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
