Flag Rice Krispies Treats
Happy Flag Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Election Day or any other American flag themed holiday! These United States Rice Krispy flag treats are a big hit with the kids, big and small. While these babies are a bit time consuming to make considering, there are only three ingredients. Luckily the end results make the efforts worthwhile, and you will undoubtedly make someone’s day with them.Melt 5 tablespoons of butter on low heat in a large pan on the stove, then add a 10 ounce bag of mini marshmallows. It takes patience since you have to keep the heat on low. Stir in red food gel for the first batch only. Add 5 cups of Rice Krispies cereal and stir together, then put onto buttered cookie sheet. Butter your hands to be able to repeatedly hit the treats to be able to flatten it onto the bottom of the pan and spread it out evenly. The other time consuming step is having to wash your pan each time you make another batch. Repeat the process and make the white batch. For the blue batch, use 3 tablespoons butter, 3 cups mini marshmallows and 3 cups cereal. (Add the blue food coloring gel before you mix in the Rice Krispies.) I use a long, skinny bread loaf pan.Cut the red and white treats into one-thirds. You should be able to gently lift up a 1/3 section of red onto the cutting board. Then layer white, then red, then white. Next, take the blue treats out and place on the left side of the stack. With the remaining one-third sections of the red and the white, cut each in half again. You will then layer red, white, red and end up with one strip of the white to discard (in other words, to snack on). Press everything together and mold it into place.Simply squeeze and press the seams together if there are any gaps or edges hanging over.Gently cut through sections 3/4 inch to 1 inch thick while holding the rectangular structure intact.Continue cutting through carefully.Gently place inside a cellophane treat bag or individually wrap with plastic wrap. The Rice Krispies Treats taste fresh for several days, even a week or two later.Depending on how think they are cut, this will make approximately 15 total flag treats.

DIRECTIONS: Make one batch at a time of the red, white and blue layers. In a large non-stick pan, melt butter on low. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat, then add the food coloring, stirring until well blended. Working quickly, add the Rice Krispies next, stir until the cereal is well coated. Butter the bottom of a cookie sheet (or loaf pan for the small batch), then dump the treats into the pan. It will be too hot to touch, so wait a few minutes to allow it to cool, then with buttery hands, press the treats evenly to flatten out to all four corners. Repeat until you have done all three batches.
Cut each of the two pans of treats into one-thirds. Then layer red, white, red, white. For the final three rows, cut the red row in half, then the white row in half to make room for the blue layer. Add the blue layer and nudge everything together. Let the whole thing cool down a bit before slicing.Congratulations to my nephew, Brendan, who just graduated from high school in Las Vegas.
